Arequipa is located at 1000 km in the south
of Lima, it lies in an oasis at 2300 m.a.s.l., with nearly one

and high volcanoes, first of all the famous Misti, a symbol of
Arequipa; which has been built out of white volcanic rocks called
"sillar“, the reason for its popular nickname "The
White City“.
The name Arequipa is associated
with an old legend which tells of Arequipa being founded by the
fourth Inca, Mayta Capac , whose army invaded and camped in the
valley and when it was time to leave, some of his soldiers asked
him to stay forever, right on the Inca responded in Quechua: "Ari
quepay“ which means "yes you may stay here“.
Founded at 1540 by
Francisco Pizarro in the nineteenth century Arequipa became an
important center for sheep and alpaca wool exportation to England.
Currently, Arequipa, without a doubt, maintains its economic leadership
and has become the southern commercial and industrial center of
the nation.
Arequipa has also two of the deepest canyons of
Earth, the Cotahuasi Canyon and the Colca Canyon.
The city of Arequipa has a semi-arid and temperate
climate with a maximum temperature 22°C and a minimum of 7°C.
The rainy season starts in January and ends in March.
